Bengaluru: The Bangalore University (BU) campus at Jnana Bharathi allow public vehicles to pass through, which often ends up in gridlock. Due to this, safety of students became a serious concern. To address this matter, the Karnataka government is planning to build a 2-km-long elevated road (flyover) right over the campus. This flyover would connect Mysuru Road and Ullal Road, reported TOI.
Over 4,000 students are currently enrolled in the university, which has 54 departments. Every day, a large number of vehicles cut through the campus, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
This often leads to traffic jams, accidents, and constant noise. Due to this, students’ safety, peace in hostels, and the learning environment is greatly affected. Students as well as teachers have been raising the matter repeatedly.
What Will The Flyover Do?
According to the officials, the flyover will act as a a Metro corridor, keeping through-traffic above ground and away from classrooms and hostels. The state’s higher education department will prepare a detailed plan for the project.
Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar said that no other university allows public vehicles to pass through its campus like this, and the flyover would help solve the issue.
"The number of vehicles inside the Jnana Bharathi campus is increasing. No other university allows public vehicle movements inside its campus. We are, therefore, considering building a flyover to ease traffic movement for both students and the public," the media report added.
Students Have Shared Their Problems Too
A postgrad student, Aishwarya, said hostel life is noisy due to honking, even late at night. Another student, Vivek, said the whole campus turns into a parking area during peak hours.
A senior government official confirmed that many students are at risk because of the traffic and noise. Since the university does not have enough funds to build the flyover, the government is discussing how to take the project forward.
BU Vice-Chancellor S M Jayakar added that completely banning vehicles may not be practical, so this flyover idea is being seriously considered.
