As anticipation builds for Superman, the first film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, controversy is already swirling — and not from critics, but from a section of Zack Snyder loyalists. Some fans of the original 'SnyderVerse' have reportedly launched an online campaign to sabotage the film’s release on July 11, prompting a sharp yet composed response from Gunn himself.

James Gunn replies to SnyderVerse fans

On Reddit, one user rallying Snyder fans posted a call to 'fight for our SnyderVerse' by disrupting Gunn’s Superman debut. The post encouraged tactics like posting spoilers, leaving negative reviews, and reserving tickets without purchasing them in order to affect box office sales.
James Gunn, however, appears unfazed. Responding to the movement on Threads, he wrote, "I think we will survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events."
In a follow-up interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn offered a more detailed perspective on the backlash. "I don’t mind it. I think it’s good. I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you... It’s all right to have an opposing force every once in a while," he said, explaining that one actor from Superman, who he did not name, gets emotionally affected by online chatter. "I said, 'First of all, you realise that the trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive. These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.'"

Gunn calls some criticism 'ridiculous'

Talking about extreme cases, Gunn added, Some of the things get ridiculous — I just know that every time something comes out, it doesn’t matter how positively received, there’s gonna be something that is of great controversy. It was great controversy that the sun caused Superman pain.”
Superman, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, releases in theatres July 11.
