Devshayani Ekadashi 2025: Chaturmas Begins as Lord Vishnu Enters Divine Slumber, Know All About It

Ashadha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Devshayani Ekadashi. It falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. It's a spiritually significant day for Hindus and people worship Lord Vishnu. Devshayani Ekadashi comes just after famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. Devotees observe a fast and perform special prayers and rituals in His honour. It is believed that worship and penance on this day bring great spiritual merit.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe and all life within it, enters a deep yogic slumber (yog nidra) in the cosmic ocean (Ksheer Sagar) on this day. According to Drik Panchang, "Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on this day and wakes up after four months on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Devshayani Ekadashi is also known as Padma Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi and Hari Shayani Ekadashi. "

This marks the beginning of the Chaturmas, a four-month sacred period during which auspicious activities avoided. During this time, the responsibility of cosmic order is said to fall upon Lord Shiva.

As per the Drik Panchang, in 2025, the Ekadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in Ashadha begins at 6:58 PM on 5th July 2025 (Saturday) and ends at 9:14 PM on 6th July 2025 (Sunday). Based on the sunrise time and the tradition of observing Ekadashi as per the Udaya Tithi (tithi at sunrise), Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on Sunday, 6th July 2025.

The fast should be broken the next day after sunrise and before the end of the Dwadashi tithi. If Dwadashi ends before sunrise, the fast may be broken anytime after sunrise. For 2025, Parana should be performed on 7th July (Monday) between 5:29 AM and 8:16 AM, which is considered the most auspicious time.
