Reginald, the Tallest Living Dog in the World, Meets Pearl, the Shortest Alive

Reginald, the Guinness World Records titleholder for the tallest dog alive, and Pearl, the world’s shortest living dog, met last month.

The all-American canine extremes–a seven-year-old Great Dane from Idaho with a height of 3 feet and 3 inches and a four-year-old Chihuahua from Florida that stands at 3.59 inches–are separated by three whole feet.

Despite their massive height difference, which is about as high as an acoustic guitar, the dogs’ owners had no reservations about bringing them together for a playdate.

“Reggie gets along really well with other dogs, and other human beings,” explained Sam Johnson. “He loves them a lot.”

The gentle giant grew rapidly from a “pint-sized” pup into the tallest-known dog, but without losing his feisty, childlike personality.

As for Pearl, she is still just a tiny little fur baby, but almost immediately takes to big dogs like Reginald.

“When Pearl meets bigger dogs, she is really friendly,” said Vanesa Semler. “I think she has no idea she is a small dog. Normally she’s really playful with bigger dogs, she just wants to be around [them].”

Both the pooches hit it off right away. When made to sit on a sofa with Pearl, Reginald lowered himself to her eye level, while the Chihuahua ran back and forth on his legs.

Shortly after, they began to hang out around the Johnson house, where the meeting took place.

“I was surprised Pearl wasn’t more afraid of Reggie,” recalled Sam. “But she was so excited and interested in him, and he was just like 'whoa, I have no idea what that is!'”

The owners also discovered how notwithstanding their sizes, the dogs are both uniquely high-maintenance.

“They have more similarities than differences,” said Sam. “People say ‘only small dogs wear clothing’, but Reggie has a bunch of sweaters he wears.”
