New Delhi: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who lost his life in the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, will be accorded a state funeral with full honours on Monday. The Gujarat government has also declared a one-day state mourning in his memory.
The body of the former Chief Minister was confirmed after the DNA testing. The report came today at 11:10 AM, three days after the plane crash.
His body has been handed over to his family, and his last rites will be performed in Rajkot. Officials from the Chief Minister’s Office were present at the civil hospital in Ahmedabad to oversee the transportation of his mortal remains.
A large team of forensic experts is working to identify the victims of one of India’s worst aviation disasters by matching their DNA with samples collected from their relatives. DNA matching is a complex medical and legal procedure that involves multiple layers of verification. Only after a thorough series of tests and confirmation of the DNA samples are families contacted and asked to collect the bodies of their loved ones.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed Vijay Rupani’s identification on Sunday morning. Vijay Rupani's last rites will be performed in Rajkot. Earlier on Sunday, Gujarat Health Minister Rishikesh Patel stated that the state government would make all necessary arrangements once the family finalises the funeral details.
"Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited late Vijaybhai Rupani ji's residence today and told the family members that his DNA has been confirmed. His family will take call on last rites and final stage preparations for cremation. After consultation with them, all arrangements will be done," Rishikesh Patel said.
