Air India Ahmedabad Plane Crash: India was left horrified after an Air India plane crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday- June 12. Reportedly, the tragedy unfolded at around 2 PM. The London-bound flight- Air India Flight AI171- carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed soon after it took off in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. The number of casualties has not been confirmed yet. As per a statement by aviation regulator DGCA, a 'May Day' distress call was also issued to the Ahmedabad air traffic controller- soon after the takeoff.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash
The Boeing aircraft reportedly departed at 1:39 pm from Runway number 23 at the Ahmedabad airport. Videos showed the plane losing altitude quite rapidly, followed by the deadly crash.

Rescue Operations
Intensive rescue, evacuation, and firefighting operations were launched soon after the accident. The aircraft reportedly reached a maximum barometric altitude of 625 feet (airport altitude is about 200 feet) and then started to descend with a vertical speed of -475 feet per minute.

May Day Call
The Ahmedabad air traffic controller also received a 'May Day' distress call from the pilot. However, as per aviation regulator DGCA, the plane received no response.

Horrifying Pictures
Horrifying pictures and videos of the crash and its aftermath soon began to circulate online, which spoke volumes of the destruction the tragedy caused.

Crash Near Medical College
Reportedly, the aircraft crashed into the hostel mess of BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar, resulting in spine-chilling visuals from the college.

Property Damage
As per eyewitnesses and early rescue reports, several students were still inside the mess when the plane crashed.

Ruined college Mess
The pictures of the ruined mess tables full of plates and food in them further left many emotional over the situation.

Structural Damage
The crash also resulted in heavy structural damage. As per ANI, almost 70 to 80 per cent of the area has been cleared.
