Mumbai Rains: Mumbai is set to experience a wet and wild weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the city on June 14, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.
It’s the monsoon’s dramatic return, after an early onset on May 26, the rains had taken a brief pause, offering a few weeks of scattered showers. But now, the weather is shifting once again, and not just for Mumbai but much of Maharashtra.

Mumbai Weather: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Ahead

Speaking to reporters, IMD Mumbai scientist Sushma Nair said, “The alerts are issued as the weather conditions are favourable for heavy rainfall activity. This is a revival of the monsoon and the conditions will remain for the next four to five days.” She added that while many parts of the state will see rain, Konkan and Madhya Pradesh will experience stronger effects due to an active cyclonic circulation.
The weather bureau has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai for June 15 and 16, suggesting continued rainfall though of a lesser intensity. The Orange Alert for neighbouring Thane remains in place for June 14 and 15, while Raigad has been issued a Red Alert for June 14, followed by an Orange Alert for the next three days.
In the past 24 hours, rainfall has intensified in parts of Mumbai. Areas such as Worli (59 mm), Malabar Hill (52 mm), Dadar (45 mm), Matunga (40 mm), Bandra (31 mm), Juhu (24 mm) and Ghatkopar (20 mm) received significant showers, with the city core seeing more rain than the suburbs.
The local weather forecast for the next 24 hours suggests the likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds continuing, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Heavy rain alerts across Maharashtra

Beyond Mumbai, other regions are also on alert. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have both been issued Red Alerts, while Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and the ghat areas are on Orange Alert. Districts such as Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, along with much of Marathwada and Vidharbha, have received Yellow Alerts.
The IMD also confirmed that the conditions are favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into central India, including the Vidharbha region.
