In what comes as a big development, Sachin Tendulkar reportedly has approached the ECB to preserve the Pataudi legacy. For the unversed, the ECB decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy and rename it to Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy - a decision that faced heavy backlash from the cricket fraternity.
However, according to a report in Cricbuzz, Sachin Tendulkar approached the BCCI and ECB to keep the Pataudi link alive in the India-England Test series. An ECB official told the website that the ECB now plans to keep a medal in the name of former India captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Reportedly, the ICC chair and former BCCI secretary Jay Shah also played a big role in the development.
"Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series," the official further told this website. It is likely that the authorities will name a medallion in the name of late MAK Pataudi, which will, in all likelihood, be given to the winning captain," Cricbuzz quoted the ECB official.
Meanwhile, an event to officially rename the Pataudi Trophy to Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy was set to be held on the sidelines of the World Test Championship final on June 14, however, it was postponed as mark of respect to the people who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. The BCCI and ECB are now looking for a new date to officially rename the series.
"Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost)," a very high-ranked ECB official told Cricbuzz on Saturday. The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy," the ECB official further said
