Bangladesh interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to restrict ousted Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina from speaking to the people of her country, and noted that it is all about social media these days. Yunus said he requested PM Modi not to let Hasina speak to Bangladeshi people as it is fuelling their anger.
However, Yunus said, his request was outrightly rejected.
Speaking at an event at Chatham House in London, Yunus said terrible things happened in Bangladesh, and he would have shown that to the world, had it been possible. "If I had the chance to show the one-minute video of it, one-minute video for the entire thing, whatever somebody captured, you'll understand what it is, how the things happened, how terrible things, how cruel things happened."
"So it's not the one minute, it goes on month after month, that happened and came to the peak of this in July, and finally, on the 5th of August, the government disappeared," he added.
He then referred to India and said that the anger has now transferred in New Delhi "because she, the Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina), went there...and started living there."
"The problem is, when I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I just simply said, You want to host her? I cannot force you to abandon that policy, but please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people, the way she is doing," Yunus said recalling his conversation with PM Modi
"She announces such day, such and such hour, she will speak, and the whole Bangladeshi get very angry. The way she is speaking. Why is she keeping this whole anger thing inside of us now?" he added.
Yunus further said that India refused to accept his request. "PM Modi's answer, I quote, he said, 'it's a social media, we cannot control it.'"
"What can you say? It's an explosive situation. You can't just walk away by saying it's a social media," Yunus added.
Notably, India has given Sheikh Hasina shelter after she fled Bangladesh following the violence that led to a coup of the government.
