Multiple Platforms Down In US Amid Google Cloud Outage - Here's What We Know

There has been a massive disruption in the services of some cloud-based applications in the United States on Thursday amid a reported global outage of Google Cloud Platform (GCP). As a result of the outage, multiple platforms that use GCP, such as Spotify, Discord, Twitch, and others, also faced a significant outage.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks such outages based on users' reports, showed massive outage reports with GCP. As of this writing, more than 13,000 people in the United States reported an outage with GCP.

Google Cloud engineers traced the disruption to a misconfiguration in its Identity and Access Management (IAM) system, which caused widespread failures across key cloud infrastructure components. The services were restored later on Thursday.

"Our engineers have identified the root cause and have applied appropriate mitigations," Google Cloud stated. “All the services are fully recovered from the service issue. We will publish analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation. We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue.”
